While Schematron is both powerful and simple schema language, its practical usage may be a bit perplexing for the uninitiated. This tutorial should help you with the first steps using Rick's Jelliffe implementation of Schematron.
Dave Pawson's ISO Schematron tutorial also contains explanation of the software behind Rick's imlementation.
The tutorial is in early stages, I hope it will improve in the future. (Mila)
